Biography

Takayoshi Nakai

Childhood

From around the age of three, He attended a music class where he learned Eurhythmics. Growing up in a music-loving family, He was constantly exposed to classical music and film soundtracks during car rides and mealtimes. Raised in a Christian household, He also became familiar with hymns from an early age. Because his parents prohibited watching TV after dinner, he didn't have access to popular music shows or drama theme songs that his school friends were into, and he grew up largely unaware of mainstream music trends. He also took piano lessons as a child but quit around the fifth grade.

At around age 14, He became interested in the guitar after discovering the Japanese folk duo Yuzu. At 15, just before high school entrance exams, He saw a music video by a visual-kei band on TV and was struck by the guitar. Eager to get a cool-looking instrument, he used his New Year's gift money to buy a uniquely shaped electric guitar, which marked the beginning of his deep dive into the world of visual-kei rock.

Band Activity

During high school and university, he moved through several bands in search of the ideal group. Unable to find the right fit and having started experimenting with DTM (desktop music production), he recorded ?Psychedelic Dream?, playing all the parts himself. Just as he was about to commit to a solo path, he finally encountered the ideal band. However, the band disbanded after only a few live performances and a few months of activity. After that, he decided to continue as a solo artist.

Transition to Singer-Songwriter and Setback

He was invited to perform at the local Yokohama live house Yamate Angels Club by its owner. When he performed an instrumental piece on electric guitar, the owner told him, ”If you're going to perform solo, you really should sing too!” Encouraged by the owner's words, he began learning vocals from the owner and transitioned into a singer-songwriter. For several years, he held a monthly live event at that venue. In 2019, at age 27, although he had expanded to performing at other live houses, he began to feel his limits and decided to end his musical activities.

Return to Guitar Instrumentals

After several months without playing the guitar, he realized, ”I just can't quit guitar.” He returned to guitar instrumentals and began working on an album centered around pieces He had performed during his singer-songwriter days, including ”Hisou”, ”Highway”, and ”Sakura”. Believing that ”Japanese people only listen to vocal music,” He also began studying English. In 2022, He released ”Hisou - mixture slam -”, followed by ”Alone” and ”Highway”, along with their respective music videos.

Life in Ireland

In 2023, at age 31, He moved to Ireland to practice English in real-life situations. After arriving, he released the album ”Medios Mixtos”. While living there, he performed street live shows. During one of these performances, he met video editor Tomohiro Maruta, and they quickly hit it off. Together, they shot music videos for ”White Whale”, ”I'm Still on the Way”, and ”Rain Dance” in Ireland.

Post-Return Activities

He returned to Japan in February 2024. After returning, He began studying under Kensuke Yahata. On September 27, He performed at Lilith, Sakae Ward Cultural Center in Yokohama. This became effectively his first solo hall concert, drawing a crowd of around 300 people.
